A Villa Tells its Story: “A former villa, then a hotel, (…) this three-floor hipped-roof building was designed in Renaissance style with mezzanine floor and baluster balcony by August and Friedrich von Thiersch, 1873/74, main building by Joseph Poschner, 1838/39.“ This is the building’s description in the Bavarian List of Historical Buildings and Monuments, a crisp and factual account a very exclusive structure. August and Friedrich von Thiersch were famous architects and lecturers. August von Thiersch conceived the Villa in the style of an Italian mansion. Its construction was commissioned by Prince Welmeir Michail Teodorowitsch, who desired to showcase sheer size and affluence. The Villa was named after him: Villa Theodorowitsch. While August occupied himself with the construction, Friedrich von Thiersch dedicated his efforts to the interior design. This might make the Villa the only masterpiece on which the brothers collaborated. August was known due to his teaching activities, although he did sign his name to a number of churches and official as well as private buildings. Friedrich became famous for work commissioned by official bodies. He won the architectural competition for the German Reichstag building, together with its eventual erector. He also designed and constructed the splendid Kurhaus in Wiesbaden for the German Emperor. Other famed buildings include the Munich Justizpalast, the Frankfurt Festhalle and the Friedenskirche in Ludwigsburg. The Villa itself was only ennobled after the Prince’s departure. In its new function as the “Grand Hotel Bayerischer Hof – Tegernsee” it became accessible to a wider, very moneyed clientele. Its lakeshore location, spacious premises and regal past together catered the perfect atmosphere for its illustrious guests. Today, busts of the Thiersch Brothers overlook the Villa’s stately entrance area and remind visitors of its creators. From 2013 to 2015 the building was completely and elaborately renovated and now presents itself with renewed glory. Beside its stately architecture, the villa impresses with its individual lake access and jetty and gorgeous lake views from its holiday apartment and from the elevated garden.
